Michelle’s advice on the show

Should people in public-facing creative industries have mentors?

Michelle recommends that anyone working in a public industry have a mentor to maintain perspective, especially regarding audience growth and feedback, since mentors can normalize the ups and downs of building an audience.

How should anxious people cope when they can't achieve an 'ideal' calm state?

Michelle advises that it's fine for anxious people to get through however they can and not beat themselves up for needing distraction or busyness; the goal should be maintaining some balance and calmness rather than aiming for perfect, unaided peace, especially during a crisis like a pandemic.

How do you grow an audience from zero with no marketing budget?

Be scrappy and strategic rather than relying on ad spend — print and distribute your own flyers, use personal networks, and make sure people actually find the content; 'fake it till you make it' and push through the discomfort of having almost no listeners at the start.

How should you handle negative audience feedback as a growing podcast/content creator?

Decide what feedback is actually productive versus just harsh noise; don't let a handful of critical comments change what you do if the majority of your large audience responds positively, but keep legitimate critiques in the back of your mind.

How do you manage guilt around heavy social media use when it's part of your job?

Let go of blanket guilt about phone/screen time if you are otherwise content, exercising, and engaged with life; recognise social media's genuine value for community and connection rather than treating disconnection as a cure-all.

Stories Michelle told

Benji's zoomies concussion

Ep 727▶ 9:21

Michelle recounts how her new puppy Benji, while doing high-energy 'zoomies' around the courtyard, missed the open doorway and ran into glass, giving himself a concussion that required an emergency vet visit.

Printing flyers for $67 at Officeworks

Ep 438▶ 40:21

Michelle recalls Shameless' earliest, no-budget marketing efforts — printing 200 pages at Officeworks repeatedly, splitting the $67 cost with Zara, and posting flyers around RMIT and bathroom stalls before shifts at Mamma Mia.

Retracting the 'tribe' apology

Ep 438▶ 51:29

Michelle describes impulsively apologising in the Shameless Facebook group after a listener called the word 'tribe' offensive, then later reversing her stance on-air after researching the difference between the general word and specific offensive terms like 'powwow'.

Being wrong about Hunter Markets and a 'mummy blogger'

Ep 438▶ 55:03

Michelle and Zara recount two instances where they criticised an influencer-resale marketplace and a mum-focused content creator on air, only to be corrected by the people involved and to update their views publicly.

The Sarah's Day breakout segment

Ep 309▶ 18:01

Covering influencer Sarah's Day's unverified health claims about treating precancerous cells naturally became Shameless's first big breakout moment, leading to tension with their employer.

Michelle's salicylate intolerance diagnosis

Ep 309▶ 34:22

Michelle describes developing severe skin rashes, worsening asthma, and depressive moods around age 20 which led to a dietitian diagnosing a salicylate intolerance she'd had as a child but 'grown out of' according to her parents' assumption, though it had returned.

Questions these interviews answer

Drawn from the episode transcripts.

What does Michelle Andrews say causes her anxiety?

Michelle explains her anxiety is not socially triggered by interactions with other people, but is instead rooted in her relationship with herself — she is hyper-critical of herself and places too much value on others' opinions, which becomes worse when she isn't kept busy.

From episode 727→
How did Michelle Andrews and Zara McDonald's book deal come about?

They signed the book deal in a food court at Highpoint shopping centre in April 2019 while eating chips from a burrito place, and started writing it in June 2019.

From episode 727→
How has isolation affected Michelle Andrews' mental health?

Isolation removed her usual coping mechanism of staying busy (commuting, being in the office with colleagues), leaving her alone with her thoughts more, which she says has made her anxiety less well-managed than it had been in the preceding two years, prompting more frequent psychologist appointments.

From episode 727→
How do Michelle Andrews and Zara McDonald divide responsibilities at Shameless Media?

Michelle runs content, community management and social media, while Zara handles logistics, planning and the calendar; each avoids touching the other's territory (e.g., Michelle has no access to the shared calendar, Zara doesn't manage Instagram).

From episode 438→
Why don't Michelle and Zara commit to a fixed long-term plan for their podcast business?

They say the media industry changes too quickly, and locking into a long-term plan risks tunnel vision; they prefer to stay flexible and open to shape-shifting, even though they're asked about a 'big picture plan' in interviews.

From episode 438→
What happened when Shameless Media used the word 'tribe' on their podcast?

A listener said the word was offensive and Michelle Andrews instinctively apologised on their Facebook group, but after doing her own research she concluded the general word 'tribe' isn't offensive (unlike specific tribe names or terms like 'powwow') and said she regretted the reflexive apology because it shut down discussion.

From episode 438→
How did the Shameless podcast actually get started?

Michelle Andrews and Zara McDonald pitched the podcast idea to a media network where they worked; the network initially said yes, then reversed course. Rather than wait for permission, they taught themselves podcasting (recording, editing, platforms) and launched it themselves while still employed, using guerrilla marketing like posters in university bathrooms to build an audience, eventually quitting their jobs once the show gained traction.

From episode 309→
Why do podcast co-hosts get criticized when they disagree with each other?

Zara and Michelle explain that audiences are often surprised and even unsettled when female co-hosts visibly disagree, framing it as 'catfighting,' whereas genuine friction and distinct personalities are actually what make the show authentic and give it its dynamic, according to the hosts.
