Jordan’s advice on the show

How do you recover from a panic disorder that affects eating or swallowing?

Combine professional counselling (Jordan did around 20 sessions) with long-acting medication like fluoxetine if an underlying anxiety condition is identified; expect habitual physical responses to persist even after the panic itself subsides, and give the medication weeks to take effect.

How should you prepare research for an in-depth interview?

Spend a day or several hours consuming as much information as possible, put it into a structured biographical document, sleep on it, then revisit the notes to form early life, key topics, and rounding-out sections; actively seek angles not already covered in prior interviews with that guest rather than repeating known PR lines.

Is it worth bringing back large amounts of wine from overseas trips?

Not really worth it logistically given import allowance limits (around 2.25 litres per adult); better to treat wine as simply 'another thing to do' while travelling rather than stockpiling to bring home.

Stories Jordan told

Jordan's panic disorder and inability to eat solid food

Ep 588▶ 1:04

Jordan explains how severe anxiety manifested as a panic disorder affecting his digestive tract, making it hard to swallow solid food; he underwent 20 counselling sessions and now takes fluoxetine, describing the slow process of the medication working alongside ingrained habitual responses.

Getting teased at Greek school

Ep 588▶ 31:03

Jordan recounts briefly attending Greek school as a young child, where he was teased for having fairer hair and not being able to speak Greek like the other kids, leading to regret that his parents didn't push him to learn the language.

Planning (and abandoning) a Japan wedding

Ep 588▶ 33:18

Jordan and his fiancée Lauren initially planned to marry in Japan to limit guest obligations from their large Greek/English families, but logistical issues (multi-step marriage registration across provinces and embassies, plus a typhoon scare) led them to instead marry at Port Phillip Estate near Lauren's parents.

The wealthy wine customer at The Botanical

Ep 588▶ 1:02:18

While working as a sommelier at The Botanical restaurant (which later went into receivership), Jordan served a wealthy regular (associated with the Specsavers owner) who would buy $2,000–$3,000 bottles of Lafite Rothschild, drink them alone over two hours, and leave Jordan half a glass each time.

What is Jordan Michaelides' podcast and what is its format?

Jordan hosts Uncommon, a guest interview podcast released around Tuesdays/Wednesdays with a new guest each episode, structured in a biographical format that aims to cover angles not already explored in other interviews with that guest.

From episode 588→
What caused Jordan Michaelides' difficulty eating solid food?

Jordan had a panic disorder that manifested in his digestive tract, called visceral hypersensitivity, causing anxiety-driven dry mouth and a tic around eating. He treated it with 20mg of fluoxetine (Prozac) and about 20 counselling sessions.

How does the Australian Podcast Ranker measure podcast popularity, and why do Josh and Jordan think it's flawed?

It ranks shows by average weekly downloads (Monday–Sunday) over a 4-week reporting period per IAB guidelines. Josh and Jordan note radio networks can game this by increasing episode frequency or splitting one show into multiple smaller feed items to double download counts without real audience growth.
