“So we're in Richmond, Hampton, Black Rock, Narre Warren, site down in Geelong and Torquay, and over in Perth. All of those physical office locations are empty, and our entire team works from home using Slack, Teams, Zoom, Xero.”
Ep 691▶ 2:57
“My relationship with money, it's not so much I don't need $1 million, but I don't need $10,000. There's a level of comfort you have from working hard and getting a return on the value that you give.”
Ep 691▶ 5:11
“The ATO is definitely not the bad guy... it's again communication. Talk to them about what happened. Talk to them about why you did it a certain way.”
Ep 691▶ 19:08
“Nothing. Leave your accountant alone. No, no, no. Seriously, joke.”
Ep 691▶ 21:12
“If they turn around and went, "Actually, we think you were collecting an extra $50,000 a year tax," they will lodge an assessment that you were receiving that extra $50,000 a year tax, and then it's up to you to prove that you weren't.”
Ep 691▶ 34:32
“If anyone goes down, it's 97.”
Ep 691▶ 38:01
“Businesses are complex. Business is hard. It's definitely not easy. You work your ass off, and you've got to be prepared for it. You've got to really want it, or the businesses that don't work are the ones that didn't really want it bad enough in the first place.”

Jason’s advice on the show

How should I invoice a US client if I'm GST registered?

If the service is exported offshore it's typically GST-free, so no GST is charged. If GST does apply, include a statement converting the GST amount to Australian dollars using the RBA exchange rate on the invoice date, since GST must ultimately be reported in AUD.

How do I correctly charge GST when getting reimbursed for a client expense?

Work out the GST-exclusive cost of the item (e.g. an $88 item is $80 + $8 GST), then charge the client that same $80 plus GST, rather than charging GST on top of the full $88, to avoid over-collecting.

What should employees and employers ask about JobKeeper?

Business owners need to confirm a 30% revenue reduction test, pay eligible employees at least $1,500 per fortnight before the cutoff, and lodge applications by 26 April for the first payment round; employees should ask their employer directly whether they're applying and fill out an employee nomination form.

Should I claim my home office as a business owner using the actual-cost method?

Be cautious claiming a percentage of home running costs (interest, utilities) as a business owner, because this creates a capital gains tax liability on that percentage of the home's growth in value when sold; using the simplified 80 cents/hour method as a personal deduction avoids this CGT exposure.

Should I withdraw $10,000 from super early during COVID-19?

Think about the long-term cost: $10,000 withdrawn now could mean roughly $100,000 less at retirement due to lost compounding. If facing genuine financial hardship, talk to a financial advisor or accountant before deciding, and avoid investing the withdrawn amount personally since personal tax rates (up to 32.5-45%) are much higher than super's 15% rate.

What questions should I ask when choosing an accountant?

Ask them to explain how your tax is calculated (Medicare levy, HELP repayments, etc.) in terms you understand, and clarify how you'll be charged (flat fee vs hourly rate) so there are no surprises.

Do I need to charge GST when invoicing an overseas client in US dollars?

According to Jason Robinson, services exported offshore are generally GST-free, so no GST needs to be charged. If GST does apply, the invoice must show the GST amount converted to Australian dollars at the RBA exchange rate on the invoice date, even if the rest of the invoice is in USD.

What's the difference between an accountant and a financial advisor?

Jason Robinson explains an accountant/business advisor handles tax minimisation and day-to-day business advisory, while a financial advisor focuses on superannuation, personal insurances (income protection, TPD, life insurance), and long-term wealth and savings strategy.

Should I withdraw my $10,000 from super early during COVID-19?

Jason Robinson advises caution: withdrawing $10,000 now is tax-free but could mean roughly $100,000 less at retirement due to lost compounding, and investing it personally outside super means being taxed at your marginal rate (up to 32.5-45%) rather than super's 15% rate.
