Should an aspiring radio or media presenter start their career in a regional market?
Kel Wolfe says that if he had his time again, he would not spend years at regional stations; instead he'd join a street team or take a digital content producer role in a metro market like Melbourne, because being physically present and known to decision-makers matters far more than sending demo tapes remotely, and he would start a podcast of his own sooner.
While hating their posting in Wollongong, Kel and his co-host Wal couldn't get authorized studio time there, so they drove hours back to their old Tamworth station at night, recorded demos from midnight to 4am with a sympathetic former manager's help, and sent them to Triple M to try to get into the Melbourne network.
Kel describes bumping into an old Melbourne acquaintance with a 'criminal temperament' at a Shepparton gym; the friend had been in and out of prison, got worse after being networked with more criminals inside, but eventually turned his life around and became religious with a family.

Tommy worked in Shepparton regional radio for around two years, where Kel Wolfe was a presenter and Star FM breakfast producer. The episode reunites them to swap Shepparton stories — the radio gigs, the venues, and the locals they both knew.
From episode 407→Kel Wolfe explains that record labels typically own an artist's master recordings and take a cut of revenue; Metallica is cited as one of the few major acts to buy back their masters, while The Verve lost full royalties on 'Bittersweet Symphony' to the Rolling Stones after a sampling dispute, which ties into the discussion of Taylor Swift's masters being sold without her direct deal control.
