Emmylou’s advice on the show

What should I do if I want to build an audience but feel like I have nothing to say?

Work backwards: ask yourself why you want to be out there saying something, then keep questioning that reason until you uncover a deeper purpose; don't be afraid if the answer doesn't come immediately, and accept that your 'why' can change over time.

How do I know whether to take a brand sponsorship deal?

Evaluate every opportunity by asking how it benefits your community, whether you genuinely enjoy and believe in the product, and how it aligns with you — rather than separating content into strictly 'free' versus 'paid' categories.

How should I handle criticism or negativity from people I know versus strangers online?

Recognise that negativity from family often comes from care, not malice, so try not to take it personally; for negativity from people you know, talk it through with someone else; for faceless trolls, it can help to disengage and bow out rather than fight, even without full closure.

How do I keep creating content or showing up when I'm feeling low?

Take care of yourself first rather than pouring from an empty cup; your community will wait. If you still need to post, share honestly that you're feeling low, or queue up previously prepared content rather than forcing something polished.

How do I stay motivated to keep showing up every day on a creative project?

Understand that you won't always feel inspired or motivated, but consistency itself — showing up daily regardless of mood — is what creates real growth, similar to doing a daily walk or a daily podcast.

From episode 429→
What advice does Emmylou give to someone who wants to build a following but feels they have nothing to say?

She suggests working backwards from your 'why' — repeatedly asking why you want to show up and put yourself out there until you uncover a deeper purpose, without fear of not having an immediate answer.

From episode 429→
How does Emmylou Mccarthy deal with online negativity and trolls?

She says negativity from close people stings more than from strangers because family 'has your back' even when being harsh, whereas with anonymous trolls she sometimes wants to confront them, though she tries to bow out of ongoing negativity rather than fight it.
