Belinda’s advice on the show

How can I stop drowning in email throughout the workday?

Close the email browser/app entirely when deep work is needed since seeing new messages makes it hard not to respond immediately; print out documents like white papers to review away from devices instead of reading on screen.

How should a growing media brand handle increasing inbound email volume?

Create a default template or quick response for common scenarios/queries to reduce friction and cognitive load, rather than leaving emails unanswered because a bespoke reply feels too effortful.

How do I avoid burnout as a consultant or solo business owner?

Treat rest and recovery as seriously as an athlete would, put rules in place around technology and sleep, and recognise that over-delivering to clients out of fear of under-delivering can hamstring your earning capacity and lead to burnout.

How can a brand without big sponsorship dollars start commercial partnerships?

Experiment with small or 'micro' advertisers to build case studies and proof points before pursuing larger sponsors, treating early paid partnerships as experiments to learn what works rather than needing a fully proven model upfront.

How do you build a strong personal brand beyond your day-to-day project or title?

Don't limit public sharing to just your most visible current project; actively share the fuller range of your interests, work, and character so people see the 'red thread' connecting your past and present pursuits.

How do I start defining my personal or business brand?

Think about what you want to be known for or remembered for, what phone call you'd love to get in an ideal world, and build a hypothetical website exercise (colour scheme, tone, offerings, 'secret sauce') to clarify positioning before building anything real.

Stories Belinda told

Winning the AeroPress and gold straws at episode 500

Ep 562▶ 0:00

Belinda recounts winning an AeroPress and gold-plated straws in a raffle at the show's 500th episode event, and the household debate over where to store and eventually use the AeroPress (settled on the family beach house for summer).

The annual financial advisor hamper

Ep 562▶ 18:33

Belinda describes receiving an annual Christmas hamper from her financial advisor delivered by two girls door-to-door, noting she can't eat most of the contents (due to intolerances) and ends up regifting items like champagne and dukkah.

Belinda's burnout and exit from 2XU

Ep 383▶ 20:41

Belinda describes being fully immersed in her high-pressure global role at 2XU, crying at work as a breaking point, resigning with nine weeks of banked annual leave, and gradually transitioning into consulting without pressuring herself to have a plan right away.

Questions these interviews answer

Drawn from the episode transcripts.

Why do premium brands like Tiffany's avoid discounting?

Belinda Wall and the hosts explain that discounting cheapens a premium brand's perceived value; instead, premium brands use gifts-with-purchase, bundles, or loyalty perks to add value without competing on price.

From episode 562→
What did Belinda Wall learn from Enneagram personality profiling in 2019?

She learned that her tendency to over-give to clients was partly about seeking validation, and that protecting her own energy and well-being ('self-care like a boss') was essential to sustainable, high-quality work.

From episode 562→
What does it mean to 'amplify' a personal or business brand?

According to Belinda Wall, it starts with identifying what you want to be known for and why people would come to you, then building the proof points, story and consistent touchpoints (website, content, culture) that support and communicate that identity authentically.

From episode 383→
Why did Belinda Wall leave her corporate role at 2XU to start her own consultancy?

She describes being burnt out after years in a fast-paced, immersive 'live and breathe' company culture; a breaking point (she cried at work) led her to resign, use banked annual leave, and eventually ease into consulting without pressuring herself to have it all figured out in the first 12 months.

From episode 383→
Why are women often less represented as podcast guests or public speakers according to this episode?

Belinda Wall and the hosts discuss that confidence gaps (women often needing near-certainty before acting, versus men acting at lower confidence levels) combined with fewer prior media appearances create a barrier to entry that can unconsciously be reinforced if podcasts use past media experience as a selection metric.
